Congratulations to Dr. Michael A. Ortega for being awarded an R21 grant through the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)! Dr. Ortega’s lab is based out of the Queen’s Medical Center for Biomedical Research (QCBR), where his team investigates mechanisms of kidney injury response.

The grant titled “TWEAK-Fn14 regulation of non-canonical NF-κB signaling in chronic renal inflammation,” will support the Ortega Lab for 3 years as the team focuses determining the role of non-canonical NF-κB signaling in promoting chronic cytokine pressure in response to kidney injury. Identifying proinflammatory features of chronic kidney disease can lay the foundation for novel therapeutic approaches that promote sustained kidney health and function.
