House Rules

House rules are designed to protect you, to provide for your safety, and guide you in your relationships with coworkers and the supervisory staff of the following entities (hereafter referred to as "Queen's"): The Queen's Health Systems, The Queen's Medical Center, Queen's Development Corporation, and Queen Emma Land Company. These rules are not intended to cover every possible situation or be in order of severity or seriousness. Further, rules may be added from time to time. Department Heads may issue rules for their department, provided the rules are not in conflict with the House Rules. All employees are subject to either disciplinary action or discharge for any of the following:

  1. Destruction, loss or improper use of either property or equipment of The Medical Center, including wasting or spoiling of supplies.
  2. Failure to report the theft, breaking or breakdown of Medical Center property or equipment when it is the employee's responsibility to do so.
  3. The unauthorized access to, forging of, altering or falsifying of, and/or divulging of any Medical Center document or record (including computerized records/information).
  4. Revealing or divulging confidential information regarding patients, visitors, employees, physicians and the Medical Center (including failure to follow procedures necessary to maintain confidentiality).
  5. Punching the time clock for another employee.
  6. Unlawful, immoral, indecent or improper conduct on the Medical Center premises or during work hours; or when such conduct off the Medical Center premises or during non-working hours affects the employee's relationship to his job, his co-workers, his supervisors or the Medical Center's services, property, reputation or goodwill in the community.
  7. Use of profane or abusive language against a patient, visitor, physician, another employee and/or when it constitutes insubordination.
  8. Fighting, threatening or attempting bodily injury to another employee, patient, visitor or physician.
  9. Negligence, carelessness, or mischief having a detrimental effect on the health, safety or property of patients, visitors, employees, physicians or the Medical Center.
  10. Creating or contributing to unsanitary conditions.
  11. The unauthorized distribution, possession or use on the job of drugs or alcoholic beverages; reporting for duty under the influence of drugs or alcoholic beverages, or with the smell of alcoholic beverages on the breath.
  12. Gambling in any form on the Medical Center premises.
  13. Smoking where or when such practice is prohibited on Medical Center premises.
  14. Absence from work without giving notice (unless the giving of notice is not possible), unauthorized absence from work, irregular attendance at work or habitual tardiness in reporting for work.
  15. Abuse of sick leave privileges and benefits.
  16. Failure to report to supervisor immediately all accidents; unsafe, hazardous, or unsanitary conditions or disease which could cause jeopardy or injury to patients, visitors, and physicians and employees; failure to observe established safety rules.
  17. Acceptance of tips or gratuities except for modest gratuities made to a unit or department such as flowers or candy and except for tips in the Coffee Shop.
  18. Insubordination, refusal or failure to obey instructions or to perform work as required or assigned, willful slowdown, restriction or interference with others in the performance of their jobs.
  19. Using/operating equipment or supplies, including telephones and computer terminals of the Medical Center without authorization or permission. Unauthorized possession/use of keys to the Medical Center facilities.
  20. Pilferage or theft (including unauthorized removal from Medical Center premises) of Medical Center property or property of patients, visitors, employees and/or physicians.
  21. Loitering on Medical Center premises.
  22. Discourtesy to patients and/or visitors.
  23. Soliciting of patients, visitors, employees and/or physicians; posting and/or distributing notices or other material on Medical Center premises in violation of the Medical Center policy.
  24. Falsifying, refusing or failing to give testimony or to cooperate when accidents, misconduct or grievances are being investigated by the Medical Center.
